Renovation 2009

The ILM facility is getting a makeover this summer!!!

We are excited about these changes, and hope you are too, since it will further improve the educational experience of our students, your children!
We would like to keep you abreast of developments regarding the renovation as well as solicit your assistance, which is why we thought creating this webpage would be a good idea.

Reasons and Benefits

The current renovation was necessary because of:

  1. Improved classroom experience: Larger, more spacious, better laid-out classrooms will further enhance the learning experience for ILM students, in-line with ILM's vision to constantly improve whatever we do.
  2. Advance planning for projected growth: With enrollment still trickling in for 2009-2010, we do not want to turn away any potential students due to lack of space.
  3. Maximum usage of the facility: Two offices need to be converted into proper classrooms. In addition, an extra classroom is required to house 2nd grade.
  4. Addition of bathrooms to comply with City code/occupancy requirements: The occupancy of the building is increasing due to conversion of offices to classrooms. This requires us to increase the number of bathrooms to four.
  5. Limited storage space

Benefits of the renovation:

  1. On average, 35% larger classrooms.
  2. A better learning experience for ILM students
  3. Ability to accomodate more students per class
  4. Addition of the 2nd Grade classroom
  5. No subsequent renovations needed until 2011, allowing the facility to be used for generating additional revenue via summer programs during 2010 and 2011. In addition a single comprehensive renovation costs less than multiple smaller renovations.
  6. A proper secure, storage area

Project Costs

Our initial estimates, as shared with you at the ILM Spelling Bee were $45,000. Alhamdulillah, due to a competitive bidding process with the contractors, as well as the generosity of our contractor and architect, our final cost went down to approximately $30,000. The breakdown is as follows:

Type of Expense Approx. Cost Comments
Architect $3,000 Br. Abdel Kader El Assar has been very generous in subsidizing his fees. Any other architect would have cost us at least 3 to 4 times the amount. Please remember him in your duas.
Fire Alarm $2,000 The conversion of offices into classrooms requires new equipment to install. The expansion of classes requires existing equipment to be moved. This work is being carried out by Signal Systems, Inc. who also did the initial work on the fire alarm last year.
General Contractor $22,000 Brs Abdelwahid and Taha from Casablanca Construction have gone out of their way to help ILM. Casablanca donated $5000 worth of materials for the project. They also agreed to a weekly payment schedule over the course of the project, with a final payment of $3000 due within 90 days of completion.
Misc Expense $3,000 This includes costs associated with extra materials such as paint, exit signs, carpet shampooing and cleaning, floor buff and polishing, city fees, other expenses.

How you can help

During the Spelling Bee, each one of you was asked to donate $1000 to fund your share of the expected construction costs, estimated to be $45k at that time. Alhamdulillah, 9 parents and 2 teachers pledged $18,000. This included one pledge of $5000 and one of $3000. Allaho Akbar! Out of those pledges $9300 have been as of 6/26/2009, Alhamdulillah.

At the Graduation, an additional $5,000 was pledged by 5 parents. Another $160 in spontaneous donations was realized, by the Grace of Allah.

The current financial picture is:

Total Need $30,000

As you can see, we need immediate funds to pay the contractors. So...

If you have already pledged, please fulfill your pledge as soon as possible.

If you have not pledged yet, please do so now.
You can
